This event aims to shed light on how to think about impact in the investment decision process, and key points to consider to measuring that impact. Allodium Investment Consultants, Flat World Partners, Sonen Capital and Cogent Consulting, with community support from Sundance Family Foundation, have joined to help provide insight into how to think about these topics as a consideration for amplifying the impact of the foundation’s mission through its investment corpus.

Two sessions over the course of the morning will cover the following topics:

  1. [8:00AM] A Practitioner’s Perspective: How to Implement and Measure Social and Environmental Impact Through Your Investment Managers
  • This session is exclusively for foundation trustees, foundation investment managers and foundation executives.
  • Foundation Trustees and Investment Officers increasingly field questions around the alignment of investment portfolios with social or environmental impact.  Guidance on the investment management decisions related to values alignment and the perceived inability to measure these considerations within an investment have been gating issues for many.  Understanding measurement of impact is one thing, connecting relevant key performance indicators and identifying how they drive investment value is the next step in the evolution.  The session will present the Prudent Practices for Investment Stewards as a starting point for trustees and investors who want to manage assets in alignment with the mission and values of a foundation.  Beyond that starting point, advice and solutions around manager selection and the measurement of these social and environmental impacts, in theory and in practice, are essential for successful implementation into a portfolio.

  1. [10:30AM] Impact Investing: Taking Measurability beyond Tracking Investment into Informing Future Decision Making
  • As more and more data becomes available, third-party providers of impact standards continue to emerge, and industry-wide metrics are accepted, measuring measuring social and environmental impact continues to be a dynamic and evolving exercise. Foundation professionals will learn what data and industry trends may mean to truly understand the sustainability and impact of an existing portfolio. Understanding measurement, and how the drivers that produce this data can generate alpha and inform investment decision making is the next evolution.
